The Needle: Trump Destroys 430 Trees in East Potomac Park Despite Judge’s Order to Stop, Federal Agents Search Ilhan Omar’s Home, Arlington First Responders Have PTSD, and More

  • Shady lane: On Saturday, NBC4 reported that more than 500 trees could be cut down at East Potomac Park, which the Trump administration says has nothing to do with its golf course renovation plans. A court filing revealed that the National Park Service planned to remove at least 529 trees, stating that they “do not contribute to the historic landscape” and their removal is part of a “tree management and cultural landscape rehabilitation project.” Though a federal judge halted the tree cutting yesterday, the administration defied the court order and has already chopped down 430 trees. The D.C. Preservation League is suing to block convicted felon and President Donald Trump’s plans. Plus three points for judges, preservationists, and protests but minus one point for defying orders. +2 [NBC4, WTOP]
  • Gone fishing: Federal agents searched Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home on Monday as part of a criminal investigation. Earlier this year, Vice President JD Vance said the Trump administration would investigate Omar for alleged immigration fraud. Minus two points for using the government to harass your political enemies. -2 [AP News, NBC4]
  • Morale compass: Arlington first responders who worked in the aftermath of the January 2025 midair collision near National Airport are experiencing PTSD and other negative impacts. According to an internal memo, 20 county fire department workers who took part in the response spent “hours in freezing conditions, handling dismembered bodies, pediatric victims and severely mutilated remains” and had “critically inadequate post-incident personnel support.” The document says many of those have experienced depression, family strain, alcohol use, sleep disturbances, and eroded trust in leadership. Minus one point for PTSD. -1 [WTOP]
  • Outside the box: Images of National Guard troops standing in front of a ballot box in Foggy Bottom circulated over the weekend but the National Guard says they were just loitering, not guarding it. U.S. law prohibits troops “at any place where a general or special election is held.” Minus one point for unwanted troops. -1 [Post]
  • Check your privilege: On Friday, a federal judge ordered the Kennedy Center to turn over financial records as part of the ongoing lawsuit involving Trump’s role in center operations. Trump is the board chair and the judge has yet to determine whether he can use “executive privilege” in roles unrelated to the presidency. Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty’s lawyers objected to the DOJ’s attempt to use executive privilege to limit the evidence the center will turn over. Plus one point for judges. +1 [Independent]
  • Ad blocker: On Monday, a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to stop spending taxpayer dollars on their TV ads and cancel those scheduled to run. But the ads kept running despite the court order. Plus one point for court orders but minus one for defying them. 0 [Democracy Now, Washington Sun]
  • She’s gone: Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece and Don Jr.’s ex, has resigned at Trump’s request after embarrassing reports about her conduct, which include asking a Republican donor to pay off her $100,000 credit card bill in exchange for favors. Plus one point for ousting her but minus one point because only women seem to be sacked in TrumpLand. 0 [NYT, AP News]
