At least 12 people were injured, including six children, in a shooting Saturday near a football stadium in Tallahassee on homecoming weekend for Florida A&M University, authorities said.
Tallahassee police Chief Lawrence Revell told reporters that no arrests had been made.
In a statement, police said the preliminary investigation indicates that a fight broke out prior to the shooting. It followed a football game in a crowded area around 8 p.m. Saturday night.
Revell said two dozen of his officers were already in the area when the “altercation” broke out near the football stadium.
Eleven of the victims sustained gunshot wounds, and at least three victims sustained serious injuries, according to police. A victim’s grandmother was injured while fleeing the scene.
One victim was a student at Florida A&M, Revell said.
No fatalities were immediately reported.
“We heard a couple of gunshots and a crowd of people running. I had gotten trampled a little, but as I got up, I turned to my right and saw a person laid out on the ground,” a witness, student Jayden Dubois, told WCTV.
The university said on social media that the shooting happened near its campus and that it remained safe.
“The University is aware of an incident that occurred near campus on Perry Street on the evening of October 24. The Tallahassee Police Department is on the scene and actively investigating the situation,” Florida A&M said in a statement late Saturday. “Our hearts go out to the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident. While the campus remains safe, individuals are encouraged to avoid the area to allow law enforcement to conduct its investigation.”
